Gonzalez Uvalde s LULAC hit a truimphant note last Saturday evening with a capacity crowd attendance at its First Annual Banquet To Honor The Outstanding Mexican-American Students. The guest speaker, theHonorable Henry B. Gonzales, easily won the hearts of Uvaldeans and his speech left the community with a spirit of accomplishment and of great hope for the future. Roy Ramirez-Deputy State Director of LULAC was master of ceremonies. Ruben Bonilla, LULAC’S State Director who was to be the keynote speaker was unable to attend but sent a written message read by Mr. Ramirez. Hector Garcia, Uvalde LULAC Chaplain read the opening prayer. Mike Esparza, Uvalde LULAC President spoke on the history of the nation's largest hispanic organization. "Since 1929 LULAC has continued to be at the forefront in bringing about a better quality of life for all Americans. We as LULAC members are committed to continue the struggles for equality, fairplay, freedom of speech and equal protection under the law. Let there be no doubt, we are Americans of Mexican decent and America will always be our country." Esparza went on to say that LULAC still had much to do in order to accomplish the goals of our founding fathers back in 1929. Attorney Rogelio Munoz, local LULAC Vice-president introduced the students that had been chosen as the Outstanding Mexican-American Students in Academics and Athletics. Rodriguez “Laurels For LULAC” I was very proud and happy last Saturday evening, as I witnessed the gathering of my community at the First Annual LULAC Banquet and shared in the honoring of our outstanding Mexican-American students and their parents, i witnessed a very formal,1 respectable and enjoyable event. Congressman Henry B. Gonzales easily won the hearts of those of us that didn't know him personally and he left us with the memory of a friendly and concerned person. Yes, our community is changing for the better. LULAC is providing us with a respectable and unifying organization that was greatly needed in Uvalde and its leaders and members should feel proud for making the banquet a lasting success. LULAC Honra Alumnos Sobresalientes Uvalde's Mexican-American community will continue to progress and contribute to our city for the benefit of all its citizens through strong and dedicated citizins such as those that have chosen to become LULAC members. We all know the pain and humiliation of prejudice but we also know that it is only through our own example of good will and repect to our anglo friend that we have more to gain. We must speak out when necessary, admit our own short comings and continue to improne every frontier before us—be it education, politics, or economics, but always with dignity. Rodriguez "Laureles Para LULAC" Me senti muy feliz y orgullosa igual que tanta gente que asistió al Primer Banquete Annual de LULAC al presenciar la reunion de mi comunidad y compartir en la honoracion de los Estudiantes Mexico-Americanos Sobresalientes de Uvalde y sus padres. Presencie un evento muy formal, respetable y agradable. El Congresista Henry B. Gonzales fácilmente se gano los corazones de todos nosotros que no lo conocíamos y nos dejo el recuerdo de una persona amable y interesada en nuestra comunidad. Si, nuestra comunidad esta cambiando para lo mejor. LULAC esta proporcionándonos una organización que se necesitaba mucho en Uvalde de sentirse orgullosos por haber hecho el banquete un triunfo que durara mucho tiempo. El evento fue un tributo a los estudiantes Mexico-Americanos mas sobresalientes de la Escuela Superior de Uvalde. El Congresista Henry B. Gonzales, quien representa al Distrito 23 en Washington, fue el orador principal y recibió una animada bienvenida por los asistentes. Su platica fue mayormente en ingles pero termino hablando en su lengua natal al despedirse del publico. Sr. Gonzales hizo énfasis en el progreso que se ha hecho en la educación de los Mexico-Americanos, enumerando estadísticas del censo nacional sobre Uvalde. Man Charged In Youth’s Murder Uvalde was shocked this week with the murder of a very popular and well known Uvalde youth, Oscar Alejandro age 19.
