PAGE 4 SWTJC NEWS: EL UVALDE TIMES Sports by “Bull” AUGUST 27, 1978 Drama Auditions Richard Garcia Takes Musical, acting and dancing talent w¡|i |)e in demand at 7:30 p.m. August 30 when the SWTJC Theater Department conducts auditions for the upcoming musical "Man of La Mancha." Auditoning in the Tate Auditorium, theater director Richard Holcomb will be searching not only for persons who can dance sing and act but also for area residents who can join the accompanying orchestra. The famous Broadway play is scheduled to open on the junior college stage November 2-4. Songs like "D “Dulcinea," “ The Impossible Dream," 'I’m Only Thinking of ílim," ¿md " A Little Gossip" compliment the script written by Dale Wasserman. “ Man of La Mancha" is the story of Miguel de Cervantes, an aging man who is an utter failure in his varied careers as playwright, poet and goverment tax collector. Thrown into a dungeon in Sevilla to awaite trial by the Inquistion for an offense against the Church, Cervantes is hauled before a kangaroo court comprised of his fellow prisoners who are thieves and cutthroats. The court contrives to confiscate Cervantes’ meager possessions, one which is the uncompleted manuscript of a novel called "Don Quixote." Cervantes, seeking to save the manuscript, purpose to offer a unique defense in the form of an entertainment. The court accedes before their eyes, donning makeup and costumes, Cervantes and his faithful manservant transform themselves into Don Quixote and Sancho Panza and proceed to play out the story found in the unfinshed manuscript. In addition to the fall musical, the SWTJC Theater Department will present Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie" March 1-3 in the Tate Auditorium. With auditions scheduled for Jan-urary 15, the play will depict the Wingfield family as they live a life of poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment. The lives of Amanda and her children Tom and Laura are meaningless and irritating as each seeks to escape the real world through different means. Tom escapes through alcohol and the unrealistic world of the movies as Amanda and Laura create a false world of illusion in order to make life bearable. Selection of a spring melodrama to end the 1978-79 theater season will be announced at a later date, according to Holcomb. City Golf Tourney Native German To Teach His Language at SWTJC The Uvalde Golf Association held its annual City Championship August 19 and 20 at the Municipal Golf course. The tournament was opened to residents of the city of Uvalde only, with 64 players making up the field. Uvalde’s local pro Jim Key stated that this year was the first year in City Championship play that players were not allowed to improve their tee which refers to playing the ball down. In this type of play you can not move the ball in the fairway or rough, as a result of this rule change, scores , on average were a little below par for local golfers. The 64 players were divided into 4 flights (groups), with trophies given to the top three in each flight. The flights were determined by the first day scores. The second day scores were then added to determine the total score for the tournament. Local pro Jim Key who was playing, but was not competing shot a 149 total, stated that even the pro has an off day. Finishing 2nd in Championship flight was Lynn Spurgen with 36 hole total of 148. Third place in the flight was a dog fight, with three players finishing with a 151 total. Grover Buttler, Steve and Roy Torres, were all thrown into sudden death playoff with Mr. Butler taking the honors. A native German who immigrated to America after World War II will instruct a Southwest Texas Junior College night class tor area residents “who want to le^n the German that the traveler would use." Siegfried Jucknies, a language instructor at the junior college, will teach Conversational German 133 to those students interested in not only learning the language but also in studying German culture and customs. "I will stress the German that the traveler would use in a German speaking country with minimum stress on grammar," J ucknies said. Jucknies, who received a bachelor's degree --------- in English from Trinity University in San Antonio and a master’s in German from Middlebury College in Vermont, said he will stress the study of German music, drama food, folk customs and folklore in addition to a study of the Language. By ottering the course from 6 until 9 P.M. each Thursday night, he hopes to attract many community residents as students. Highlights of the class will be a trip to the Wurstfest in New Braunfels an a holiday German meal at Christmas time. Those interested in taking the course may register during the first class session at b P.M. Thursday in Room 6 of the Tate Fine Arts Building. Taking the first place trophy in the first flight was Lawson Walden with total ot 155. Dr. Bill Tindol edged out Bud Buckner for second with 36 hole total of 161 and Buckner holeing out at 162. Second flight finishers were Tony Alvarado 174, Steve Dishman 177, and Dr. Jay Hiler 178. Third flight winner saw Milt Wiebush 176, Kenneth Durham 183, and Joe Cos 188.
