Page 6 EL UVALDE TIMES JANUARY 24, 1980 Letters to DEBORAH WHITE Special Thursdays at Anthon Last iveeh's column dealt with women dissatisfied with their individual roles. Today the men have their say. DEAR DEBBIE: Sometimes I think women get married just so they won't have to look for a New Year’s Eve date. I’m 26 and my wife is 24. We’ve been married four years. When we have guests or go out she’s interested in everything I say, laughs at my jokes and always looks terrific. When we’re home alone she acts like I don’t exist. Our sex life is perfunctory even though I’ve tried to keep the romance going. When I try to discuss our problems she tells me we have a perfect relationship. It may be perfect for her but it’s dismal for me. My friends all think she’s terrific because they only see the public side of her. Someday I’d like to have kids, but the thought of spending the rest of my life with a robot scares me. Any advice? CONFUSED DEAR CONFUSED. Some women (and men) get married only because they don’t enjoy being single. This may be true of your wife. If she doesn’t love you, find someone who does. If her inability to maintain a satisfying relationship is caused by deep-seated emotional problems, see that you both get the proper counseling. Your relationship is far from perfect now and it will only get worse if you don’t act. * * * DEAR DEBBIE. We’re expecting a baby and I’ve just lost my third job in a year. I’m beginning to doubt my ability to take care of my wife and soon-due child. I have a very poor employment record . . . get lots of jobs because I’m personable and bright (so they tell me) but can’t keep them because I’m incompetent in an office. It’s true. Why do men always have to be the like breadwinners? I’d nothing more than to stay home and take care of the house and baby when it arrives. My wife doesn’t mind working. In fact she says she’d prefer it but she’s afraid people will think we’re weird if we switch responsibilities this way. CAN T COPE DEAR CAN’T: Aside from training and conditioning, there’s no valid reason the man must be the breadwinner if he and his wife prefer to reverse roles. Once the two of you accept this it won’t matter what people think. They’re not paying the bills. It will also give you time to get your head together and see if you prefer some type of manual labor to a whitecollar job. ♦ ♦ ♦ DEAR DEBBIE: I ’ve been with the same firm for 18 years. I have been promoted regularly and am now General Manager. There will be an opening soon for Regional Sales Manager. Until recently I was a shoo-in for the job. Unfortunately there is a new woman in the office (she’s been with us two years) and I’ve heard rumors that she’s being considered for this promotion. In all truth she’s a real hot-shot and a go-getter, but she’s also very sexy and I have reason to believe she’s sleeping with my boss. I would feel humiliated if I lost out on this promotion to a woman. How can I deal with this? AMBITIOUS DEAR AMBITIOUS: Most of your anxiety stems from the fact that your competitor is female. Many men find this threatening. Think of her as a co-worker instead, and concentrate on doing your best possible work. Unless your boss is a ninny, the job will probably go to the person who can return the most profit to the firm, so relax and give it your best shot. Thursdays are special days at Anthon, if you like to read. Every Thursday at 6:30 p.m., the doors to the campus library are opened for Anthon students. The two requirements for children checking out books during the evening hour are liking to read and being accompanied by parents or other family members. This weekly activity is provided through the cooperative efforts of the school librarian, Mrs. Ruth Heard, and Follow Through Director, Ms. Kathleen Knippa. ‘Tt is so important for parents to read with their children,” relates Mrs. Heard. ‘T encourage parents and children to read together for fun and enjoyment without making it seem like a reading lesson.” Mrs. Moises Trevino, who is regular visitor to the library states, “I would like to encourage all parents to bring their children to the Library. Reading is very helpful to the children of our community because it improves their vocabulary. Children can enjoy the books they read and at the same time benefit from them.” Mrs. Trevino continues, “Especially those children that have a reading problem, it will help them to read and understand better what they read in their classrooms, is they practice reading at home. I personally feel that my children have a very good reading ability and understanding. They enjoy reading very much and I myself enjoy helping them to select books. ’ ’ When asked about visiting the library, the three Trevino children all agreed that they like to come to the library with their mother. There is somehting for everyone in the Anthon Library. Reference books are available for use in the library. Hllllll Preguntas al Boticario by H. BOSWELL YORK, R. PH.
