1897-08-28
Weekly, Spanish-language publication established in Laredo, Texas by Nicasio Idar (1855-1914), publisher and civil rights advocate. The publication’s subtitle “Periódico político y noticioso,” translates to “Political and Newsworthy Publication.” Described as one of the most influential newspapers along the border, La Crónica covered issues of racism, segregation of Mexican children in Texas schools, criticized the Mexican Revolution, and promoted the rights of Texas Mexicans. La Crónica also published Texas Mexican literature and poetry. Idar’s children, Clemente, Eduardo, and Jovita, played an important role in the publication. Jovita, eminent journalist and suffragist, would later manage La Crónica after her father’s death.
