Women-owned, Spanish-language magazine established in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico in 1887. Founded by Ercilia Garcia and Manuela Martinez Hopham, La Violeta was supported entirely by women, for women. The magazine printed poetry, short stories, recipes, and addressed women’s issues, with special attention to health and women’s education. La Violeta invited essays from celebrated women like Matilde Montoya, Mexico’s first female doctor, and Emilia Pardo Bazan, Spanish novelist and feminist. La Violeta did not publish between 1889 and 1893. Upon continuation, María Garza González, long-time editor and secretary of La Violeta, became director. The publication closed in 1894 and is considered a pioneer among Mexican periodicals.
